Pattern repeat, bow and skew are the areas to be considered when installing a patterned carpet. The pattern repeat is one complete pattern unit and should be considered for both the horizontal and vertical measurements of the pattern. Installers must be able to recognize the pattern repeat to ensure that they correctly match the pattern repeat from one roll of carpeting to the next.

Widthwise pattern bow measures the pattern across the width of the carpet to determine how straight the pattern is. The pattern's maximum deviation from a straight line "drawn" across the carpet width from selvage to selvage is the amount of the pattern bow.

The pattern skew is a measurement of the squareness of the pattern.
