Mismatched Pattern
Pattern match is a term used in the installation of carpet describing the alignment of pattern repeats across the seam width and running the length of the carpet. Pattern repeat is one complete unit of the pattern. Patterned carpet repeats can be found in printed carpets as well as tufted and woven. The manufacturer on the product specifications should note each product that has a pattern repeat. For example, a pattern repeat could be 18" x 24". This means that the pattern repeat is 18" in length and 24" in width.

There are two separate terms commonly used for pattern match: set match and drop match. In set match, this pattern is arranged in parallel rows across the carpet width. In a drop match, (½ drop match), the start of each pattern is started at the midpoint of the side of the adjacent unit. In the example given above, the pattern would be started 9" (½ of 18") down from the last pattern. There also is ¼ drop match, in which the pattern in the example would start 3.5" down from the last pattern.

Pattern repeat dimensions are important to the specifier and installation company because they can affect the amount of carpet required as well as the labor required to install the carpet properly.
