Seam preparation begins with the proper placement of the seams. Along with this, each seam edge must be secured properly with specially formulated seam adhesives. Running a continuous bead of seam sealer adhesive along the edge of the carpet that was cut can prevent fraying and raveling of the seams. This bead will seal the first edge of carpet and the other edge when they are butted together, forming a seam. This process is referred to as "beading" or "buttering" and is used to prevent fraying of the seam along with improving the seam integrity. Once the seam edge is secure, the seam itself can be held in place by hot melt tape. Hand sewing is another technique for securing the seam but is expensive and is limited today primarily to more expensive products, wool and the residential market. Seams secured with hot melt tape are resistant to stretching and therefore must be stretched prior to seaming. If hand sewing is used, the seam is flexible and can be stretched after seaming the carpets.

All carpet manufacturers supply recommendations for proper treatment of seams. These recommendations should be followed along with the correct cutting tools and seam adhesive during the installation process to ensure that the seams are cut and sealed properly.
