If the glue-down method of installation is to be used, floor preparation is vital. It must be free of any wax, grease, paints, oils adhesives, or any other substance that may cause an adherence problem. Depressions or cracks must be filled in and any bumps or ridges removed. The floor should be smooth enough to permit 100% adhesion with the carpet.

Direct glue-down, as the term indicates, is the application of a carpet directly to the sub-floor using specific adhesives. The sub-floor can be of many different materials including concrete, wood, metal or ceramic tile. Concrete is the most common sub-floor and proper preparation is vital for adequate adhesion of the carpet and adhesive used.
The adhesive specified must meet the requirements of the job and must be applied correctly. According to the Carpet and Rug Institute, the major causes of delamination from the floor are improper selection and misuse of adhesives.
