The first installation decision is whether or not it is necessary or desirable to use a cushion. Installation over cushion is more common in the residential market. The installation procedures for direct glue-down is significantly different from installation of carpet over cushion. Consequently, installation planning is different for the specifier. Deciding which areas in a project will require cushion under the carpet or direct glue-down is a key decision. Economics, wear life, appearance retention, comfort underfoot and luxury level are determining factors, and each enter into the decision.

End use and budget considerations may call for "direct glue-down." The glue-down installation requires careful consideration to environmental conditions, preparation of the sub-floor, adhesives, type and quality of carpet construction and its constituent fibers and seaming. This application method is recommended for large areas, where maximum dimensional stability is required, or in areas where there will be heavy-wheeled traffic.

The advantages of carpet underlayment in a commercial installation are significant. Tests show that wearlife is extended substantially when carpet is placed over cushion. For employees, the cushion underfoot reduces fatigue. Maintenance improvement and sound absorption are also advantages. In particular, cut pile carpeting is recommended to be placed over cushion whenever possible. When wheeled traffic is used on carpet, either a very firm cushion must be used, or more preferably the carpet should be adhered directly to the floor.
