There are several considerations that affect whether or not a custom product is the right choice for a particular project. These include the type of product desired, the dye type used, any allowance for pattern matching, and attic stock. Depending on the type of product, custom options may be available. Some products lend themselves easily to custom colors and patterns, others do not. Each manufacturer determines the criteria for creating a custom product, the main considerations being the yarn system used, dye type, and machinery that is used in manufacturing which determines the yardage requirements. Piece dyed products are the most easily used for custom purposes, because the dye lots are smaller and virtually any color can be achieved.

If a custom product is to be used, then the designer must consider the pattern match (if any) of the product. This will determine the yardage requirements of the initial installation as well as any repairs, additions, or replacement areas that may be needed. Also, if the project has planned expansion, or other areas to be carpeted later, then "attic" stock may be required. This ensures that the same dye lot will be used so that matching colors and patterns will not be a problem.
