As a general rule, the size of the pattern should be directly proportional to the size of the carpeted area. That is, small patterns should normally be used in narrow corridors and small rooms. The type of design, however, might dictate use of this rule. A larger pattern, which includes small design accents and a broad field, can work well in a small or narrow space. In comparison, large patterns are better suited for large open areas such as lobbies or reception rooms. The amount of furnishings also affects the pattern selected. If a room is filled with desks, chairs and other furniture, a small pattern is often preferred. However, if the room has a large open area in the center, then a larger pattern is appropriate.

A pattern repeat is one complete pattern unit and includes all of the elements in the pattern. For example, a pattern repeat may consist of three squares enclosed in a rectangle, which is repeated across the carpeting. The distance from one corner of the shape to its identical position (lengthwise and widthwise) is the size of the pattern repeat.
