Once the designer has determined the necessary performance factors, the color, texture and pattern of carpet which will best complement the interior setting must be decided. This can be a formidable task for there are numerous carpet styles available in a wide variety of color and textural combinations. A decision may be required in loop pile construction between solids, heathers and patterns. Another option may offer the same choices, but in cut pile or textured constructions.

Carpet is very compatible with all interiors, but each end-use application has its own distinctive requirements. Carpet, which meets the aesthetic needs of a modern office, is probably unsuitable for a hospital or retail store. The specifier must also be aware that carpet style trends change over time. Certain colors and textures may be in strong demand for yarns and then gradually diminish in popularity. The specifier must be cognizant of these design trends and be prepared to offer carpet that is both functional as well as contemporary in styling. Workbook 2 addresses each of these end use markets and, in general terms, the style preferences as they apply in the present market.

When properly selected, carpet can enhance an interior in a distinctive, yet complementary manner. Carpet creates a certain atmosphere, one that is pleasing to the eye and to the touch. Carpet has qualities that cannot be matched by other flooring materials. It lends warmth and comfort to an interior, helping to increase employee productivity and efficiency. Carpet also absorbs noise effectively and provides added insulation and cushion . . . qualities that have a decided effect on aesthetics.
Aesthetics uniquely combines elements of both science and art. Objective facts are merged with subjective opinions, and both play significant roles in the selection of commercial carpet. Each of the aesthetic factors discussed in this workbook is important to the overall success of the carpet specification. They should be considered first independently and then in conjunction with each other.
