Abrasion resistance is a measure of the pile fibers' ability to withstand wear and is one of the key performance factors in a carpet's selection. When evaluating abrasion resistance, look at the carpet denier and fiber type.
The best carpet for any contract project should be able to withstand moderate to extra-heavy pedestrian traffic - and possible wheeled traffic.
The heavy denier of Ultron nylon is excellent for use in corridors of a hospital, where equipment carts, wheelchairs and gurneys are in constant use. Its increased thickness provides excellent abrasion resistance. Olefin and nylon 6 are less resistant and tend to mat in traffic lanes faster than nylon 6,6.
Abrasion testing is performed mechanically by a tetrapod tester. Actual on-the-floor testing may also be conducted under regulated traffic conditions.
