One of the classic methods of applying color to yarn is by dyeing in skein form. In skein dyeing, loosely wound coils (skeins) of nylon 6,6 are immersed in the dye bath. Almost any yarn or fiber type may be dyed using this method if the yarn is strong enough to withstand winding in the skein and backwinding onto cones. Skein dyeing is especially suited for coloring small dye lots. It can produce either solid color or multicolor "barberpole" yarns when 2 or more different fiber types are used in the yarn bundle. Aesthetically, the bulk, texture and appearance of carpets produced from skein dyed yarns are outstanding and extremely difficult to duplicate by any other method. Skein dyeing is a coloration method that handles small lots efficiently, producing both solid and multicolored effects
