carpet backing Each commercial project has its own carpet performance requirements. The aesthetic qualities desired might affect the other performance properties as a light or solid color will obviously show more soiling than a medium or multicolor shade. The specifier must be aware of the geographical area, the interior scheme, expected traffic and the use application of a project, if proper performance properties are to be recommended in the carpet specification. Some key performance factors common to all contract carpet are:

Abrasion Resistance - Look at the carpet denier and fiber type. The best carpet for any contract project should be able to withstand moderate to extra-heavy pedestrian traffic and possible wheeled traffic. The heavy denier of Ultron nylon is excellent for use in corridors of a hospital, where equipment carts, wheelchairs, and gurneys are in constant use. Its increased thickness provides excellent abrasion resistance. Olefin and nylon 6 are less resistant and tend to mat in traffic lanes faster than nylon 6,6.

Soil And Stain Resistance - As a general rule, the dense molecular structure of all nylon 6,6 will prevent some spills and stains from setting into the carpet. But today's environments demand even more. Ultron nylon with 3M Commercial Carpet Protector features powerful soil protection, a heavy denier and a unique mix of cross-sections to prevent soil from becoming trapped in the carpet.

Static Control - Especially in offices and locations where computers and expensive electronic equipment can be damaged by electric shock, static control is a major performance factor. The best way to prevent static is to choose carpet with an integral static control system built into the yarn itself.

Ease Of Maintenance - All contract carpet should be vacuumed and cleaned regularly to maintain an attractive appearance, but that doesn't always occur. The carpet maintenance program may be followed initially, but could be later reduced for cost reasons by the building owners or management. This results in a carpet that wears out long before its expected useful life. Thus, it is imperative to select a carpet that's easy to maintain and offers good appearance retention.
