The carpet is also trimmed to the proper width and put through a shearing step. Shearing cuts the tops of the tufts to give uniform tuft height and to defuzz the carpet. Carpet shears have steel blades mounted on rotating cylinders. These blades cut fibers on the carpet surface similar to a lawn mower cutting grass in order to produce a smooth face on the fabric.
