The tufting machine used to make carpet is nothing more than a giant sewing machine. The machinery in use today is far more complex and sophisticated, but they work in the same basic way. Instead of one needle, the tufting machine usually has between 390 and 2000 needles. The tufting machine's needles are affixed to a needle bar that covers the full width of the machine. Machine widths vary from 6', 12', 13'6" to 15'. |
| The carpet manufacturer's basic raw materials consist of
yarn,
primary backing,
latex (this adheres the backing), and
secondary backing. The face yarn can be nylon, olefin, wool, polyester or acrylic and can be constructed in
cut pile,
loop pile or a combination of
cut and loop pile. |
