Olefin (also known as polypropylene) is any long chain synthetic polymer composed of at least 85 percent by weight of ethylene, propylene or other olefin units. Olefin is primarily sold as a solution dyed fiber or yarn and is available in both bulked continuous filament and staple fiber. Olefin is used in carpet as both backing and pile fiber and can be used for indoor and outdoor carpets. The characteristics of olefin include:
- Resistance to fading from chemicals, sunlight or atmospheric conditions
- Resistance to moisture and stains
- Low levels of static propensity
- Inexpensive fiber system
