The component materials used in carpeting may be either branded by the supplier's identification or unbranded, as a generic material type. Some carpet manufacturers select materials which carry their own brand certification. When branded materials are used, there are generally performance attributes which can be of significant importance to the specifier. Certain brands of materials have product features and advantages relative to performance, aesthetic or cost values over other brands.
Branded pile fibers, primary and secondary backings, and topical finish systems are an integral part of the commercial carpet industry. Even adhesive systems are sometimes branded. The choice of whether or not to select a branded pile fiber or backing system largely depends upon the importance of the features needed by the project. Branded systems are often acknowledged to offer more value in a commercial carpet due to the benefits received than would an unbranded pile fiber or backing system, though the cost of the unbranded system is generally lower. The initial cost of the carpet is only one factor of economics in the carpet decision. Use life, aesthetic value, cost of maintenance and appearance retention characteristics are also key considerations.
Materials, which are branded, impart additional confidence to the specifier. Specific product features can be expected of these component materials. Once the carpet supplier has recommended an acceptable carpet construction and the specifier is satisfied with the quality and cost of the product, then brand identification of the component materials can be an important factor in the final carpet selection by the end user.
