The two chemicals used to make nylon 6,6 - adipic acid and hexamethylene diamine - each
contain 6 carbon atoms per molecule. Hence the name, nylon 6,6. (In type 6, only one
chemical, caprolactam, with 6 carbon atoms is used.) Nylon 6,6 is made by combining these
two chemicals in a remarkable two-stage process. Two methods are used to make nylon 6,6, the
batch process which is used primarily for solution dyed nylon and the continuous
polymerization process. The following diagram describes the batch process.
